Water vapor permeability is a key property that influences the quality and usability of fabrics. Materials with poor permeability can lead to clothing or footwear that is uncomfortable and potentially unhealthy to wear. To accurately measure water vapor permeability, the RADWAG moisture analyzer must be fitted with a dedicated water vapor permeability testing kit.
The testing procedure involves placing a specified amount of water into an aluminum alloy vessel. A fabric sample, prepared using a blanking die, is then clamped over the vessel. Before testing, the sample should be conditioned for 24 hours in a room with stable environmental conditions. The vessel, containing both the water and fabric sample, is placed in the moisture analyzer, and the drying process is initiated at 40°C.
One of the main benefits of this method is its speed—it provides results in as little as 50 minutes, compared to up to 72 hours with conventional testing methods.
Results are expressed either in mg H₂O / 1000 mm² / 24h or as a percentage representing the amount of water vapor that passes through the fabric relative to the amount that would pass without it
